PRACTICE. Sit on your mat, facing the wall and a few feet away from it, with your knees slightly bent. Place an upright block against the wall and place a second block to one side. Secure the tops of your thighs with a strap.
Lie down, with your knees bent. Roll your shoulders back so your chest expands. Raise your pelvis as high as you can and slide the block, positioned vertically, under your sacrum (8.9a). Stretch your legs out one at a time and rest your heels on the second block (8.9b). Keep your feet together and your legs straight. Open the soles of your feet to the wall. Extend your arms along the floor toward your feet. Interlock your fingers behind the block and pull your wrists away from each other. Against the resistance of your arms, roll onto the very tops of your shoulders and coil your back ribs in. This action brings the breastbone closer to the chin and dynamically opens the chest. Then, without disturbing the lift of the upper back and chest, release your arms to the sides, slightly away from your trunk. Turn the upper arms out, so the palms face the ceiling (8.9c). Allow your breath to become quiet and even.
